Gordon Insurance Men's Pairs

6/24/2024

On Saturday June 22 we held our only Men’s Tournament of the year, the Gordon Insurance Men’s Pairs. Gordon’s has been a sponsor for many many years & their support is greatly appreciated. The timing this year wasn’t the best as on the same day the Ontario Men’s 5 a side was being played in Pickering . . so we had a smaller field than normal (12 Teams). The teams came from Lindsay, Pickering, Oshawa, Whitby, Campbellford, Belleville and 5 teams from Cobourg.
The weather was ‘iffy’ for bowling as storms ran through the area in the morning. Thankfully they were gone by 8am. They did however leave puddles of water on rinks 2,3 & 4 leaving them unplayable in the morning. Thanks to our masterful greens crews the other rinks were in great condition and playing fast once again.
The 2023 winners (Ben van Steijn / Dan Milligan) were there to defend their title. There was a ‘Bounty’ on their heads. The first team to beat them would win $30. The team with the first chance were Dave Saliba (Pickering) & Frank Dinardo (Brampton). They almost captured the prize but lost in an extra end. They must have been very demoralized as they went out and lost their 2nd game 26-0 (!) to Carl & Ernie.
With rain in the afternoon forecast we cut the games down to 3-Bowl Pairs to finish before 3pm . . but it turned out to be great weather for bowling all day long. They weren’t so lucky in Pickering where I understand it rained (with lightning) and they were not able to get in all their scheduled games.
The final results:
1st Place: Al Purcell / Berkeley Emmons (Belleville)– 3 wins 48 pts
2nd Place: Ben van Steijn / Dan Milligan – 3 wins 44 points
*Note . . Ben & Dan also won the $30 Bounty as no one beat them during the day.
3rd Place: Wayne Wallwork / Lorne Schiele (Pickering) – 2 wins 41 points
4th Place: Rick Tomkins / Bob Guppy (Campbellford)– 2 wins 40 points
High Last Game: Peter Robb (Whitby) – 15

Al Purcell has been winning tournaments left & right this year. After the games I asked him when was the last time he lost a game . . and he said he couldn’t remember that far back!
Thanks to the volunteers who came out to run the kitchen, set up the equipment, monitor parking passes, run the Share the Wealth and many other tasks.

Open Tournament Convenor
Bob Bates

Congratulations to Bill McCollam and to Martin Foxhall. Their respective 5 a side teams qualified for the play offs that will decide the Ontario Championship and the right to represent Ontario in the National Championship.

On The Road Again

6/17/2024

Many Thanks to Bob Bates for this round up of the last week.

Cosburn Men's Pairs Sat June 8

Bob Bates and Carl Ferguson won high last game (a big $80 as this event had a $1,000 sponsor).
 - Bob skipped and lost the first 2 games and was then fired . .  Carl skipped game 3 & got us the 21 pts.  We did have a chance at the Bounty prize (bottles of wine) as we played the previous years winners in game 1 . .  but lost in an extra end

Pickering Mixed Pairs on Thurs July 13.
Five Cobourg teams were entered:
 - Dave & Kathleen Shirley did the best by winning their first 2 before losing a close 3rd game.
 - Bill McCollam & Janice Slobojan got High last game (18pts). Pat & I helped them out by giving up 5 pts to them in the last end.

Others there were Al Bell & Laura Mounce, Terry Bradshaw & Anne Leahy.

Cosburn Mixed Pairs Sat June 15
Pat & I were able to win all 3 games. Our 43 Pts were enough to take home the trophy!
 - There were 28 teams and as usual in the first game we drew to play the only other team there from our area (Rick Barnard & Nicki Chamois). Got off to a 12-0 lead and held on.

Agincourt Open Triples Sun June 16
Al Bell, Terry Bradshaw & Laura Mounce won their first 2 games before losing the third to tournament winner Unky Zangwell (Willowdale). Unfortunately the one loss dropped them out of the money.

Burlington Singles Friday June 14

Bill McCollam got 3rd place ($100) in Burlington on Friday in their big singles tournament. 45 entries . .  play from 8:30 am until 8:30 pm.

Super Saturday

Cut Throat Tournament
The annual cut throat tournament took place at the club on Saturday June 8th. This was sponsored once again by the Childs family and we are most appreciative of Gerry's support for the club.
Last year's winner was Al Bell but he could not repeat his 2023 success finishing tied for fifth place. We have a new name to put on the trophy – Andrew Perry. Congratulations to him as he won the tournament with a total of 126 points, seven ahead of second place Terry Bradshaw.
Result
First             Andrew Perry 126
Second        Terry Bradshaw 119
Third           Dave Shirley 118
Fourth         Dave Johnson 116
=Fifth          Henry Kowalski 113
                     Al Bell 113

Campbellford Triples
Five of the twelve  teams in this tournament were from Cobourg so there were high hopes that some of them would be in the prizes. At least one player on each team had to be a novice.
Martin Foxhall and Lynn Bryans brought in a “ringer”, Pierre Vanderhout from Kingston and they won the two game high prize. The next two game high was the team of Ben van Steijn, Jacob Hyatt and Emmalee Smith. They lost out in their final match to the tournament winners from Lindsay.
Also with two wins (but not in the prize money were Baylee van Steijn, Sarah van Steijn and Michelle Tinney.

The other two Cobourg teams competing, with one win each, were Al Gourd, Anne Leahey and Brent Perkins. And Bill Arthur, Sheri Perkins and Louisa Arthur.
Finally, our President Peter Stuart-Sheppard was in Oshawa in a triples tournament. Playing with Hazel Joffe (Richmond Hill) and Albert Wu (Willowdale) they came second with 3 wins and only one point behind the winners.
Breaking News
In a tournament at Whitby on Sunday, shortened by rain, Bill McCollam, Peter Stuart-Sheppard and Sheri Perkins were third.

And finally for this week

I  met with Jeff Gard and Zara Caletti from Northumberland 89.7. We had a short session on the greens to teach them the basics of lawn bowling and that was followed by an interview for the Sports Spotlight programme. If you missed it click here. The interview starts about the 35 minute mark.
