The men's and ladies U25 Ontario championships were held at the club on June 28/29. In a best of 3 games Jake Masterson (Heritage) beat Erik Galipeau (James Gardens) by 2-0. In the ladies, Baylee van Steijn beat Bridget Masterson (both Cobourg) by 2-1. That game went right down to the wire. In the third and deciding game both players won one set and a 3 end tie breaker was held. Each player won an end and in the last end Bridget played a great shot to lie 3 but Baylee bettered her with a perfect draw.
The U18 ladies gold was won by Rebecca Coon. The U18s men played a double round robin format and each competitor played one another twice There was some fabulous bowling again by these four talented youths with many of the games tied at one set each and quite a few 3 end tie breakers. Congratulations to all the players. Isaac Kerr (Belleville) was the gold medal winner with an excellent performance winning 5 of his 6 games. Dekker Ly (Oakville) and Cayden Carter (Hanover) were tied in game points but Dekker took the silver medal by virtue of his head to head record against Cayden. Cayden had to be satisfied with bronze. Despite some great play Cobourg's Jacob Hyatt was unable to get into the medals. OLBA President Karen Atkin presented medals to the U25s and to Rebecca Coon. OLBA Vice President presented the men's U18 medals. Ontario Men's Fours Bill McCollam and Peter Stuart-Sheppard of Cobourg were part of the Bronze medal men's fours team at the the Ontario Provincial Fours Championships at Hanover on the weekend of June 21-22. Peter and Bill were playing with two other District 14 players, Chad Burgie and Rhys Warren of neighbouring Lindsay LBC. The team played very well all weekend, defeating a number of the top male players and top teams in Ontario to earn their medal. Congratulations to them James Gordon Insurance Men’s Pairs – June 21
On Saturday June 21 we held our yearly Men’s Pairs Open Tournament. 16 teams from Oshawa, Whitby, Campbellford, Pickering, Peterborough, Sun City Florida and Cobourg gathered on what turned out to be a beautiful day for bowling. The day started off with many high scores. Ben van Steijn 27pts, Mike Cyr (Oshawa) 21 pts, Terry Bradshaw 20 Pts and Peter Robb (Whitby) with 17 pts. The one pitfall that comes with getting a large score is that you have to play another high scoring team in the next game. That didn’t seem to bother the van Steijn, Dan Milligan team who continued to rack up the points winning their next 2 games 18- 7 and 20-6. These large scores led them easily to the trophy. The other 3 game winner on the day was the Jacob Hyatt / Isaac Kerr team. After winning their first 2 games they found themselves tied 11-11 coming home in game 3. It took a close measure to finally give them their 12-11 victory over Rick Barnard from Campbellford. The final results: 1 st Place: Ben van Steijn and Dan Milligan – 3 wins 54+11 pts (only 18 against) 2 nd Place: Jacob Hyatt and Isaac Kerr (skip) – 3 wins 43+1 pts 3 rd Place: Mike Cyr and Don Northeim - 2 wins 43 pts 4 th Place: Ron Adams and Ken Bunner (Oshawa) – 2 wins 42 pts Highest scoring 1-game winner: Bill Arthur and Henry Kowalski – 1 win 34 pts High last Game: Martin Foxhall and Ken Martucci (Sun City Florida) - 16 pts Other interesting Notes: Ben and Dan have now won 12 games in a row at our Men’s Pairs event. Jacob and Isaac will now have to contend with each other in the Ontario Under 18 Singles championships being held at our club June 28-29 Another enjoyable day at the club. Thanks go out to our volunteers. This includes Donna Ball and Mary Thibault (in the kitchen from 7:15-4pm), Draw Master Louisa Arthur and as always, the Greens crew and Ralph Hewitt at the 50/50 table as well as others who helped with set up, parking passes and whatever was needed during the day. Open Tournament Convenor Bob Bates In a mixed triples at Bobcaygeon on June 17 there was success for two Cobourg teams.
Winners with 3 wins and 42 points (20 against) were Terry Bradshaw, Al Bell and Laura Mounce. In third place Bill McCollam, Peter Stuart-Sheppard and Sheri Perkins. Each team had to include one novice. Congratulations everyone 27 players competed in the club cut throat (4321) tournament on Saturday June 7th.
