Glory be! We held a tournament - the first in almost 2 years. On July 31st we celebrated the club's 114th anniversary with a tournament. 10 triples teams competed and we played 2 ten end games. With substitutions between games 1 and 2 33 members competed and it was great to celebrate like we did. Winners With 2 wins and 33 points the team of Peter Stuart-Sheppard, Eve Gorringe and Gail Cunningham. Special congratulations to Gail who has only been bowling for a few weeks. Second With 2 wins and 28 points the team of Carol Dewey, Tom Bevan and Irene Flood. Dale McMillan substituted for Irene in game 2 Third With One win and one loss the team of Ken Bevan, Mary Salter and Brian Rogers Check out the photos page for pictures The August Newsletter is out. Slowly, slowly things start to get better. Canada Day was significant for us it was the start of Step 2 of the Ontario re-opening plan and it meant that we moved to Phase 3 of the Bowls Canada return to play protocols. For the first time this season we played triples. It was not the usual 3 game Canada Day tournament but it began to feel like normal. Ironically there has been quite a lot of rain this month which has meant some jitney cancellations but yesterday (Saturday July 10th) was one of those afternoons where the sun shone; we had 24 members out bowling; people were hanging over the fence watching and enquiring about bowling. Pure joy! With the news that Ontario moves to Step 3 on Friday July 16th maybe the end of this nightmare is in sight. You can read the July Newsletter by downloading the link below.

I am pleased to tell you that the OLBA, their lawyers and insurers have removed the restriction that only five members can be in the club grounds at any one time.
Also the Ontario Government has announced that we will be moving to Step 1 of the Ontario re-opening plan on Friday June 11th. Our plans have also been approved by the Town of Cobourg. The Executive Committee has agreed to implement the following return to play measures. This Week On Thursday of this week we can have up to 12 members either practising or playing what is described as “recreational singles” (Phase 1 of Bowls Canada return to play protocols) Saturday June 12th We will move to Phase 2 of the Bowls Canada return to play protocols. This means we can play “recreational pairs” with up to 24 members. That is 4 members per rink with an empty rink between rinks in play. Given the increase in numbers we will hold only one session on Saturday. This will start at 2.00 pm and each rink can play up to 10 ends of pairs. Members who have already booked for Saturday will be automatically entered for Saturday’s pairs. From Tuesday June 15th We will continue with play on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays for now, although we may increase this depending upon demand. Only one session will be held on each day with 10 ends of play. Tuesday and Thursday sessions will start at 7.00 pm with effect from June 15th. Wednesday and Saturday sessions will start at 2.00 pm with effect from June 16th. The current booking arrangements will continue so please contact Bill Arthur ([email protected] or 289-829-0182) to book a session. If any of this is unclear please do not hesitate to get in touch. You may book as far ahead as you wish – you do not have to wait for weekly announcements. Step 3 (anticipated early July) When Step 3 starts we can move to triples play and resume our jitneys. We will let you have further details about that in due course. Bill Arthur June 9th 2021 INFORMATION FOR MEMBERS
The club opened for members to practice and train on Tuesday May 25th. We are following OLBA advice to restrict numbers to 5 members within the club grounds at any one time pending further legal advice on the Ontario Regulations for re-opening. The dates and times available to members for bowling are being reviewed week by week at present and members will be notified by email of available sessions. Pre-registration is still required. Members should contact Bill Arthur to make bookings once dates and times are published. INFORMATION FOR POTENTIAL NEW MEMBERS Because of Covid restrictions we are unlikely to be able to hold an open house in June or offer open sessions to "give it a try" on Wednesday evenings in June as we usually do. We are looking at a system where potential members can pre-book a trial session with a club coach. If you are interested in learning to bowl please email us at [email protected] or phone 289 829 0182 to register your interest. We will then be able to email you with the arrangements for trial lessons once we finalise the details. The short mat bowling season was due to run until April 22nd but as a result of the Ontario lock down the season has now finished. For a report on the season please download this pdf file
The regulars were out as usual this week and although it was a little chilly at times, particularly on Tuesday evening we had some good bowling and good fun.. Since I was away for a few days I am grateful to Nan Hendren, Carol Dewey and Helen Beaton for looking after the bookings and ensuring that everything ran smoothly. After 5 weeks the leaders in the standings are: Bruce Becker 15 points Malcolm Wardman 12 points Fran Marsh 12 points Ralph Hewitt 12 points Bozana Brick 12 points Vince Tamburello 12 points The coming week will be our final week so it will be interesting to see how this pans out. The full results from week 5 are below and there are a few photos from Tuesday evening.
I didn't manage to get round to posting the week 3 jitney results so this time I am attaching the results for weeks 3 and 4. The link is below Fran Marsh retains her place at the top of the standings with 12 points but there is a clutch of players pursuing her. Since I do the draw for each jitney I should tell you that I am open to bribery to place any of you on a stacked team or to place one of your opponents on a weak team. Highest bidder gets first dibs each session. :) Leading players after week 4 Fran Marsh 12 points Vince (lefty) Tamburello 9 points Bozana Brick 9 points Ralph Hewitt 9 points Malcolm Wardman 9 points Bruce Becker 9 points Tuesday and Thursday nights continue to be the best attended jitneys but Saturdays have become increasingly popular. We hope to keep playing until Saturday September 26th so make the most of your opportunities to play in this curtailed season. Finally, a note for the short mat players. Donna Longman and I have been discussing arrangements for the coming season with the CCC and we hope to be able to start on October 6th. Donna will be letting you have details once we have finalized the arrangements. And maybe those of you who will be experiencing winter in Cobourg for the first time in many years would like to join short mat. Watch this space as they say. Good Bowling and stay safe Bill Arthur
