Cobourg bowlers Peter Stuart-Sheppard and Martin Foxhall traveled to the Sky Top Lodge Bowling Green in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania to compete in the Northeast Division Open Championship from August 14th to August 17th.
The format was Combo 5s, meaning a team of 5 bowlers would play matches against other teams of 5 in singles, pairs, triples and fours. Each team would play 10 rounds for a total of 20 matches. Peter played for the triples and fours teams and Martin played on the pairs and fours teams. Rounding out the team of 5 were Ryan Blair (Hanover), Steve Nelson (who plays out of both Canadian and American clubs) and Patrick Duffy (New York City).
Martin, Peter and Ryan were the only Canadians in the Open. The team played well and won the gold medal in the NED Open Championship with a record of 15 wins and 5 losses. Peter and Martin also were successful in a singles tournament at the same venue against many of the same competitors the day after Combo 5s was completed. Peter placed first and Martin second in that tournament.
The hilltop setting in the Poconos and the Sky Top Lodge were stunning and a wonderful place to bowl. Peter and Martin reported that the camardarie was amazing and they will always remember how welcoming everyone was to the visiting bowlers from Canada.
