Four ladies’ teams and four men’s teams were at Oshawa on Saturday July 25th competing in the Novice Aussie Pairs playdowns. The winners automatically qualified for the Ontario Championships being held in Cobourg (Ladies) and Bobcaygeon (Men). The championships will take place on the weekend of August 15th and 16th.
Cobourg was well represented with Terry Shannon and Ernie Sapinski (aka Ternie) and Terry Bradshaw and Al Bell (aka The Invincibles). It is fair to say that Terry and Al were favourites but they were far from invincible in their first game. After early struggles they got their act together to win that game and then went on to comfortable wins to finish with a perfect record of three wins.
Ernie and Terry struggled in their first two games but finished the day on a high with a win in their final game.
In the ladies event Lori Wills of Cobourg was playing with Heather Stubbings of Oshawa. They won the playdowns in 2025 and were slight favourites ahead of Cobourg’s Sheri Perkins. Both teams had first round wins and met in the second round. This was an excellent game with the score oscillating from one end to another. The game was really decided in the ninth end. With score tied at 6-6 Lori and Heather scored four and went on to win by three points.
Lori and Heather won their final game to finish with a perfect three wins.
It is likely that the second place team will get an invitation to play in the Ontario Championships so Sheri and Lynn knew that a win in their final game would guarantee second place. However, they lost by one point. That left three teams tied. The tie break rules came into effect which meant looking at score differentials and Sheri and Lynn had the best differential and finished second.
Update - July 28th: Sheri and Lynn have been confirmed as a second District 14 entry
