With the Ribfest as a backdrop we hosted the Ontario Ladies Novice Pairs Championship on August 15th and 16th.
Sixteen teams from across Ontario competed including Lori Wills playing with Heather Stubbings from Oshawa and the all Cobourg team of Sheri Perkins and Lynn Bryans.
The winners were Meaghan and Beth McFadyen from Port Credit. Silver was won by Ann Stubbins and Sandra Martone from Lambeth. Sheri and Lynn won bronze.
When you start an Ontario Championship your first day objective is to finish in the top two in your group to guarantee you will be returning for elimination games on Day 2. Sheri and Lynn got off to a confidence building start. They were not really in any trouble but with scores close at 8-6 after 10 ends a score of 5 and 1 in the final two ends saw them to a comfortable win a 14-6 win.
Their second-round robin game was against Lori Wills and Heather Stubbings. Lori and Heather had the upper hand in the last two District Playdowns, but Sheri and Lynn were determined not to make it three losses in a row against them. After eight ends it was looking good for them with the score at 8-3. A score of four in the 9th end and it was 12-3. But lawn bowling is a funny old game and successive scores of three and two brought Lori and Heather back into it. And can you believe it they scored another three in the last end for the game to finish 12-11 for Sheri and Lynn. At that point they knew that given other results they were sure to qualify for the quarter finals on Sunday. However, they still had one game to play and that would decide the first and second places in the group.
It was a frustrating game because their opponents were very slow players. After six ends the opposition had a lead of 10-5 but scores of two and five put Sheri and Lynn ahead at 12-10. The game then swung the other way and after ten ends they were down 12-15. By this time, it looked unlikely that the game would be finished in regulation time. Despite scoring one in the 11th end the game was over 13-15. Who knows what would have happened if there had been time to play the final end?
The quarter final game was a great performance. No panics or pressure and they won the game 17-4 to move on to the semi final where they played the McFadyen sisters. They finished fourth last year and played very well after losing their first round robin game.
Six ends completed (half way) and the McFadyens were leading 8-0. It was not that Sheri and Lynn were playing badly, more that the sisters were playing extremely well. Sheri and Lynn started to win a few ends but without the big scores they needed to reduce the deficit significantly.
The 10th end was the crucial end. Lynn ditched the jack and followed in closely with her bowl, it could not be beaten. Lynn and Sheri both played good long bowls and at one point were sitting four or maybe even five. However, with her penultimate bowl Beth McFadyen reduced the score to two and the game finished 5-10.
The loss meant they played the bronze medal game against a team from Woodstock who won the silver medal last year. It was a close game but Sheri and Lynn were mainly in control and they won 9-7 despite a little scare in the last end where, at one point, there was a possibility for the Woodstock team to rail the jack for four. Some good play by Sheri and Lynn removed that possibility and they finished deserved winners
