On Monday May 19 (Victoria Day) we hosted our first Open Tournament of the year, our Victoria Day Open Fours Classic.
Lauria Hyudai has sponsored this event for many years. This spring the Lauria family sold the business. The new owners, Port Hope Volkswagen & Hyundai have taken over sponsorship starting this year and we hope for a continuing relationship for years to come.
The tournament was very well attended with 16 teams. The number of bowlers who played (64) is probably the most we will have on the greens for any event this year. They came from Cosburn Park (East York), Lindsay, Bobcaygeon, Oshawa, Campbellford, James Gardens (Etobicoke), Cannington, Kingston and of course Cobourg. With the number of people in attendance we ran out of Parking Passes
The weather turned out better than anticipated. Yes, it was chilly at times but a lot of sunshine helped keep the players comfortable (as well as lots of coffee from Dale & Monica in the morning)
It was a very tough field of teams. This year there were 10 members of Team Canada picked to play for Canada in the Atlantic International Challenge. Only 2 bowlers from Ontario were picked and they were both here to play on Victoria Day. The luck of the draw had them (Baylee van Steijn & Eric Galipeau) going head to head in the first game! With some of the best bowling we’ve seen on rink #1 in a long time van Steijn’s team grinded out a 10-8 win.
BONUS: Galipeau’s team were the 2024 winners . . therefore there was a ‘Bounty’ on their heads which went to the first team to beat them this year. Congratulations to the winners (Ben van Steijn, Emmalee Smith & Jake Masterson). No surprise . . the young clean living team each chose the $20 Tim’s card over the bottles of wine).
Ron Larking’s Cosburn team was in 1st place after game 1 (18 pts) followed closely by the Sheri Perkins home squad (Dave Johnson, Brodie Johnston & Lisa Collins) (17 pts). These 2 teams then met in game 2 with the Larking team getting the jump to a 7-0 lead and holding off the hard charging Cobourg team for a tight 15-14 win.
After 2 games the top 4 teams (2 wins each) faced off for the top 2 prizes. The most exciting of the 2 matches was between the van Steijn team and the Jacob Hyatt team (Isaac Kerr, Terry Shannon, Ron Kingsley).
Jacob & Isaac, the 2 youngest players on the green, matched their more experienced rivals bowl for bowl and held an 8-6 lead going into the last end. However their opponents grabbed 2 pts in the 12th end to send the game into extra ends. A big crowd gathered on the deck to watch the action. (who says lawn bowling is not exciting). The outcome was in doubt until the last bowl . . . . and the experienced team finished their comeback and won the game.
Not quite as exciting in the other match as the Larking team took control early and cruised to a 15-1 win over Rick Barnard from Campbellford
The final results:
The 6 Prizes were split between 4 Cobourg & 2 Cosburn Park teams
1st Place: Ron and Cathy Larking, Ken Uyesugi, Jan Luke – 3 wins 48 pts
2nd Place: Ben and Baylee van Steijn, Emmalee Smith, Jake Masterson. 34pts
3rd Place: Mike Mogan, Frank Hibbs, Meno Jose, Ron Sellen 2 wins 42pts
4th Place: Bill MCCollam, Rick Lyons, Peter Stuart-Sheppard, David Llewellyn2 wins 40 +7 points
High last Game: Brent Bayley, Al Gourd, Deb Gourd, Anne Leahy 18 pts
Lucky Draw for teams who didn’t win a bowling prize:
Sarah van Steijn, Lynn Bryans, Stacey Hyatt, Michelle Tinney
Other interesting Notes:
Ben’s team won all three games . . but only scored a total of 3 points more than their opponents did during the day winning: 10-8. 15-14, 8-8
Jacobs team won 2 games and got no prize (low scores) . . but both teams he beat won a prize (Mogan, McCollam)
The “What the hell” award goes to Julie Perry. A bit inexperienced in tournament bowling Julie had to face the newly crowned national singles champion of Switzerland (Pierre Vanderhout) as her opposing lead in game one . . he made it a bit bewildering by moving the mat out to the hog line every time he threw the jack!
Thanks
This event wouldn’t be a success without the help of many volunteers.
Some were there long before the games started:
- The greens crew for getting the greens in great condition despite the recent wet weather. Not only were they working on the greens . . when I got there at 7:30 am they had all the tables & chairs already set up on the deck.
- The Kitchen crews who were there before most arrived and were cleaning up after everyone had left.
- Ralph Hewitt for doing the Share the Wealth draw ($97 to the club)
