Ten triples teams competed in the tournament of three eight end games and this slightly shortened format meant that the tournament was completed about 30 minutes before the afternoon thunderstorms started. We were truly blessed with the fine weather and the excellent greens.
Many of the first round games were very close and that showed in the low winning scores. Roy Thorneycroft’s team was the highest scorer with 9 points followed by Bill Arthur’s team with 8. Geoff’s team won their first round game with only 7 points. The top games in the second round followed the same pattern with Geoff’s team winning 7-4 and Bill winning 10-5 against Roy. As Geoff and Bill’s teams were the only ones with two wins they played one another in the final round to determine the trophy winner. Geoff’s team got off to a flying start and quickly built a 9-1 lead. Bill’s team fought back but it was too little, too late and Geoff’s team ran out 9-7 winners to take the trophy. That result dropped Bill’s team back to fourth place. After their first round loss Ralph Stoffers team recorded big wins in their final two games to finish with 2 wins and 25+3 points and claim second place. (Well done Ken Wren in your first tournament). In fact second, third and fourth placed teams all had 2 wins and 25 points and were only separated by plus points and points against.
The full result is on the results page and there are more photos from the tournament on the photos page.
The District Playdowns for the Ontario Fours championships were also held last weekend and in the ladies tournament Cobourg members Pauline Hill, Pat Gemmell and Kathleen Shirley teamed up with Oshawa’s Nicky Chamois. They were, however, the only ladies team entered so received a bye and will represent District 14 in the Provincial championships to be held in Windsor on June 6/7th. Good luck to them in the championships.
