Jitneys and In Club tournaments

6/23/2013

Thanks to those who sent comments on the Monday jitney/ Monday night issue.  Having considered all views the EC has decided that the daytime Monday jitneys should continue. In addition we are going to arrange some different events for Monday nights. Donna and Reg Longman have offered to organize events on July 15, August 12, and September 9. I don't  think we will be able to arrange something for every Monday night but we will do our best to fill some more Mondays. I will update you with more about this as and when events are scheduled.

We also considered trying different formats for in club tournaments. Normally these are 3 games of 10 ends starting at 9.30am but we want to see whether variations on this will lead to increased participation.

The Canada Day tournament will stay as advertised. It will be a 9.30 start and 3 games of 10 ends. We'd like some more entries for this so please consider signing up for it.

The Windmill tournament on Saturday July 13th will now start at 10.00 am and will be 3 games of 8 ends.

The cut throat (4321) will not change nor will the Anniversary tournament on Saturday August 3rd.

The Rona Cashway tournament on Thursday August 8th will be 2 games of 12 ends and will start at 10.00 am.

North Shore Probus

6/20/2013

We held a very successful event this morning when we hosted a visit from North Shore Probus. This was arranged by one our members, Kathy Maclean, who is also a Probus member. Events like this have a dual purpose. Firstly they bring in Revenue for the club and secondly they provide an opportunity for people who may not otherwise think about lawn bowling to give it a try.

Over 30 people attended and most of them tried bowling. We split the bowlers into groups of three or four and gave them lessons. After a few trial ends the groups played 4321 for about an hour and judging from the reactions thoroughly enjoyed it. Hopefully we will see some of the people returning for another session.

After the bowling the Probus club remained at the club for their lunch which their own members had prepared.

I’d like to thank Kathy Maclean for organizing the event and also the club members who gave up their time to teach our sport and help the groups with their 4321 competition. Thank you Eve Gorringe,  Marg Salley, Marilyn MacMillan, Ralph Stoffers, Helen Beaton, Dianne Lauder and Louisa Arthur.

Next week the Northumberland Probus Club will be visiting for a similar event

Kathy looks like she is explaining bias. I hope she got it right!

Gordon Insurance Tournament

6/16/2013

What a day we had yesterday for the Open Mens Pairs. With the Highland Games being held in Victoria Park it was essential to get to the club early to ensure a parking spot. Little did I expect that pipers would be starting to tune up as early as 7.30 and that the skirl of the pipes would continue unabated all day. It wasn’t too bad when playing but the spectators at the club found it a little too much.

Anyway we still had a good day under beautiful sunny skies. The tournament was sponsored by James Gordon Insurance and older members will know that  Jim Gordon is  a past President of the Cobourg Lawn Bowling Club. This was the 22nd year that he has sponsored this event.

Twenty teams competed for the trophy which was an excellent turn out and, as with the previous open tournament, a Peterborough team would come out on top. On this occasion it was Norm Smith and Bob Matthews who prevailed with 3 wins and 45 points. Norm was so complimentary about the state of the greens that he dragged Ralph and me into the trophy photo!

Unfortunately none of the Cobourg teams was able to get amongst the main prizes but Dave Shirley and Dave Carleton did win the one game high prize with 32 points.

Bill MacNab and Ron Covert almost got in the prize money. They tied for fifth place with 37 points but lost out because they had more points against them than Peter Robb from Whitby. Ron was leading and in this photo it looks like Ron is doing what he says you should not do and that’s telling his skip what to do!

Spectacular Water Systems Tournament

6/13/2013

Quite an appropriate sponsor for the tournament today – Spectacular Water Systems. Rain throughout the first of three games did not deter a determined group of 28 members. Fourteen teams of pairs contested this second in-club tournament of the season and the rain made conditions difficult with wet hands and wet bowls but that did not excuse several cries of “wrong bias!” The guilty will remain nameless.

Fortunately the rain relented during the second game by which time four teams had emerged with two wins each. The top game was Eve Gorringe and Jim Oldham against Marilyn McMillan and Joan McDonald. The other play off was Bill MacNab and Louisa Arthur against Ron Covert and Kuen Jin.

The Gorringe and MacNab teams were both successful but Eve and Jim Oldham took the trophy by virtue of their high points total of 43+5. Bill MacNab and Louisa Arthur had  26 points.

The full results can be found on the results page. The next in-club tournament will be Canada Day so look out for the sign-up sheet which will go up shortly– let’s make it a great turn out.

New format for News

6/11/2013

I'm going to change the way that I update the News page and will now be doing it as a News Blog. That shouldn't make much difference to you but it will make it easier for me to update the News page and also add other material like photos to the News page. In due course, I can also allow comments to be made on what I report and make it interactive. The other benefit is that I can categorize reports into different subjects and also archive material more easily.

This page will also become a vehicle for some more general articles on the club and on bowling.

If you have some bowling news that you want to share please email me and I can include something on these pages. Maybe you won a tournament playing at another club that you want to tell us all about. Send me a report and a photo if you have one.

Postings on the old News page are still there for the benefit of those who may not previously have seen them or those who want to refer back to them but the page location has moved - follow this link.
