What a day we had yesterday for the Open Mens Pairs. With the Highland Games being held in Victoria Park it was essential to get to the club early to ensure a parking spot. Little did I expect that pipers would be starting to tune up as early as 7.30 and that the skirl of the pipes would continue unabated all day. It wasn’t too bad when playing but the spectators at the club found it a little too much.
Anyway we still had a good day under beautiful sunny skies. The tournament was sponsored by James Gordon Insurance and older members will know that Jim Gordon is a past President of the Cobourg Lawn Bowling Club. This was the 22nd year that he has sponsored this event.
Twenty teams competed for the trophy which was an excellent turn out and, as with the previous open tournament, a Peterborough team would come out on top. On this occasion it was Norm Smith and Bob Matthews who prevailed with 3 wins and 45 points. Norm was so complimentary about the state of the greens that he dragged Ralph and me into the trophy photo!

Unfortunately none of the Cobourg teams was able to get amongst the main prizes but Dave Shirley and Dave Carleton did win the one game high prize with 32 points.
Bill MacNab and Ron Covert almost got in the prize money. They tied for fifth place with 37 points but lost out because they had more points against them than Peter Robb from Whitby. Ron was leading and in this photo it looks like Ron is doing what he says you should not do and that’s telling his skip what to do!
