Coach's Cup

5/31/2015

PictureCoach's Cup Winners (l-r) Lead-Sarah Van Steijn; Skip - Geoff Montgomery; Sponsor - Edward Cunnington; Vice - Jo Carleton
The opening in-club tournament of the season, the Coach’s Cup, is always a special event, especially since it is sponsored by Edward Cunnington of “Meet at 66 King St East” who is also a member of the club. Edward was hoping to play in the tournament which was held on Saturday May 30th but his busy schedule did not allow that. However he was on hand to present the prizes and is pictured with the winning team skipped by Geoff Montgomery.

Ten triples teams competed in the tournament of three eight end games and this slightly shortened format meant that the tournament was completed about 30 minutes before the afternoon thunderstorms started. We were truly blessed with the fine weather and the excellent greens.

Many of the first round games were very close and that showed in the low winning scores. Roy Thorneycroft’s team was the highest scorer with 9 points followed by Bill Arthur’s team with 8. Geoff’s team won their first round game with only 7 points. The top games in the second round followed the same pattern with Geoff’s  team winning 7-4 and Bill winning 10-5 against Roy. As Geoff and Bill’s teams were the only ones with two wins they played one another in the final round to determine the trophy winner. Geoff’s team got off to a flying start and quickly built a 9-1 lead. Bill’s team fought back but it was too little, too late and Geoff’s team ran out 9-7 winners to take the trophy. That result dropped Bill’s team back to fourth place. After their first round loss Ralph Stoffers team recorded big wins in their final two games to finish with 2 wins and 25+3 points and claim second place. (Well done Ken Wren in your first tournament). In fact second, third and fourth placed teams all had 2 wins and 25 points and were only separated by plus points and points against.

The full result is on the results page and there are more photos from the tournament on the photos page.

The District Playdowns for the Ontario Fours championships were also held last weekend and in the ladies tournament Cobourg members Pauline Hill, Pat Gemmell and Kathleen Shirley teamed up with Oshawa’s Nicky Chamois. They were, however, the only ladies team entered so received a bye and will represent District 14 in the Provincial championships to be held in Windsor on June 6/7th. Good luck to them in the championships.

Junior Coaching

5/22/2015

On a cold and windy afternoon Sharyl Ann Milligan was out on the greens today  with four of the junior members coaching them to get ready for the current season. Ben and Baylee Van Steijn have already had success at Provincial level in the last few years  and Braden Saunders and Danielle Goodall joined them today for practice and advice from Sharyl Ann. Lets hope that they and other junior members can emulate Ben and Baylee's success over the coming months. Here is a slideshow of today's session.

PS - I've added a Thursday night jitney photo to show that its not only the kids who go out in the cold!

What a Weekend!

The Victoria Day long weekend is always a busy time for the club with the first open tournament of the season and an open house to allow visitors to “Give it a Try”.  Last year the weather was a factor in both events with cold wet weather that affected the attendance at the Open House and restricted the number of greens that could be used for the tournament. Thankfully the weather was much kinder this year.

We had 27 visitors to the Open House on Saturday May 16th and there was lots of activity on the greens as they were shown the basics of the sport and rolled some bowls. Many showed an immediate aptitude for lawn bowling and we had 7 new members sign up during the event. Many of those who did not sign up on the day are intending to come back and take further instruction during the June Wednesday evening beginner sessions. Thanks to those members who were on hand throughout the day to help with registration, instruction and providing refreshments.

We had an excellent Open Fours tournament on Victoria Day. 72 competitors (18 teams) were playing and there were some very strong teams from Oshawa, Peterborough, Port Hope, Whitby and Cosburn Park. We had a new sponsor for the event, Lauria Hyundai, and two of their vehicles were on display in the club grounds for competitors to view during the course of the tournament.

Many players remarked upon how good the greens are for early season. The only concern on the day of the tournament was the threat of thunderstorms. However they never materialized and it was a perfect day for bowling.

Each team played 3 games of 12 ends and after the second round Doug Marshall’s Oshawa team was in the lead with 2 wins and 33 points. However they lost their final game 7-14 to the eventual winners from Cosburn Park, Toronto, skipped by Bob Bates.

The five Cobourg teams had varied results and none was in the prize money. Pauline Hill’s team was the most successful with 2 wins and 40 points and a seventh place finish. Dave Shirley’s team also had 2 wins with 31 points and finished in ninth.

The full results were: Trophy winners with 3 wins and 40 points Bob Bates team from Cosburn Park.  Second place with 3 wins and 36 points Lorne Schiel’s team from Whitby. Third with 2 wins and 42 points Bob Matthews team from Oshawa. Fourth place with 2 wins and 41 points Jim Butler’s team from Oshawa. The prize for one game high went to the Peterborough team skipped by Bob Reynolds. They had 41 points.

Overall it was a great start to the tournament season and hopefully that will continue as the many tournaments are almost fully subscribed and some have a waiting list.

Mayor opens lawn bowling season

5/10/2015

The opening day of the Cobourg lawn bowling season usually means a chilly pot luck lunch on the club veranda followed by an afternoon jitney with members wrapped up in warm clothing!

But the opening day this year was different. The pot luck lunch went ahead as normal as did the afternoon jitney but the weather was spectacular and the opening was also made more special by the invited guest, Mayor Gil Brocanier, addressing members and rolling the first bowl of the season. (Mayor Brocanier is pictured, watched by 2015 Club President, Louisa Arthur). Mayor Brocanier recalled his personal connections to the club in that his father was a member in the eighties and used to do a lot of the volunteer work.

There was a very good turnout with 42 members competing in triples teams and playing two games of eight ends. The first winner of the season was the team of Ralph Stoffers, Edward Cunnington and Joan MacDonald with 2 wins and 19+6 points. In second place was the team of Pauline Hill, Dave Hickey and Marlene Randall ( 2 wins and 19 points) and in third place was the team of Eric Carleton, Janet Taylor and Arnold Bowman ( 2 wins and 14 points).

It was a pleasure to have Edward Cunnington bowling again after a few years in which he has been too busy to bowl. It was also a pleasure to welcome Pauline Hill and Pat Gemmell to the club after the demise of their previous club, Madoc. Pauline was straight into winning action with two wins. Janet Taylor was another newcomer after her move from BC and she was also in the money (yes she won $1) with her third place spot.

The next big event at the club is an Open House on Saturday May 16th. This is an ideal opportunity for anyone interested in trying the sport to just drop in at the club and find out what great fun lawn bowling can be.

Ready to Roll

5/7/2015

The 2015 season is only two days away at the time of writing. On May 9th the club will open for its 108th season. After a pot luck lunch for members His Worship Mayor Gil Brocanier will officially open the season by rolling the first bowl. That will be at about 1.00 pm and visitors are welcome.

A lot of work has gone into getting the club ready for opening; the biggest job being preparation of the greens. In 2014 the main story was the damage caused to the greens by the ice storm of the previous winter. On opening day last year the greens had many bare patches. Thankfully the club has not had that problem this year. There have been some brownish patches caused by snow mould but these are gradually filling in.

Last season, for the first time, the club did not use any chemicals on the greens but used only natural products. It will take time for this new approach to yield dividends but great credit goes to Ralph Stoffers and Mike Hendren for the fact that the greens are in such good condition (and not slow!) as the club approaches opening day.

On Saturday May 2nd members tackled the annual clean-up day to ensure the clubhouse is spick and span and ready for opening. It’s not easy to maintain and keep clean a building that is 90 years old and used seasonably but members did a great job.

On May 16th the club is holding an Open House from 10.00 until 16.00. This is an ideal opportunity for people to just drop in to the club, find out about the sport and to “Give it a Try”

On May 18th (Victoria Day) the club will hold the first open tournament of the season, an open fours, and visitors are welcome to watch what should be some excellent bowling. A further eight open tournaments plus two junior open tournaments will be held during the season. Additionally there will be nine in club tournaments.

In addition to the May 16th open house there will be opportunities to try the sport during June. Every Wednesday evening in June the club offers free beginner lessons from 7.00 pm onwards.

The basics of lawn bowling can easily be learnt by people of any age. It does not require physical strength and is one of the few sports in which men and women and boys and girls can compete together on an equal basis. As such it is a sport for all the family. You will mostly see bowlers delivering their bowl from a crouched position but, as with curling, recent developments allow the bowl to be delivered from an upright position with the aid of a delivery stick.

Lawn bowls can be enjoyed as a social sport or, once the basics have been mastered, as a more competitive sport. Players can get whatever they want out of the sport. Contact or visit the club for more information.
