But the opening day this year was different. The pot luck lunch went ahead as normal as did the afternoon jitney but the weather was spectacular and the opening was also made more special by the invited guest, Mayor Gil Brocanier, addressing members and rolling the first bowl of the season. (Mayor Brocanier is pictured, watched by 2015 Club President, Louisa Arthur). Mayor Brocanier recalled his personal connections to the club in that his father was a member in the eighties and used to do a lot of the volunteer work.
There was a very good turnout with 42 members competing in triples teams and playing two games of eight ends. The first winner of the season was the team of Ralph Stoffers, Edward Cunnington and Joan MacDonald with 2 wins and 19+6 points. In second place was the team of Pauline Hill, Dave Hickey and Marlene Randall ( 2 wins and 19 points) and in third place was the team of Eric Carleton, Janet Taylor and Arnold Bowman ( 2 wins and 14 points).
It was a pleasure to have Edward Cunnington bowling again after a few years in which he has been too busy to bowl. It was also a pleasure to welcome Pauline Hill and Pat Gemmell to the club after the demise of their previous club, Madoc. Pauline was straight into winning action with two wins. Janet Taylor was another newcomer after her move from BC and she was also in the money (yes she won $1) with her third place spot.
The next big event at the club is an Open House on Saturday May 16th. This is an ideal opportunity for anyone interested in trying the sport to just drop in at the club and find out what great fun lawn bowling can be.
