Cobourg success in final open tournament of season

9/4/2014

What  a great finish we had to our 2014 open tournament season today. Martin Foxhall and Steve Haslam took the title by a whisker after a great day's bowling.

We had another  top class field including several Ontario champions. Twenty two  teams competed – 11 home teams and 11 visiting teams from Peterborough, Oshawa, Campbellford, Port Hope, Madoc and Milwaukee Lake Park (Wisconsin).

After the early morning mist the sun shone relentlessly and as the day wore on the greens got faster and the play got better. Each team played three 12 end games and after the first round Ken Bunner and John Mackenzie of Oshawa were the top scorers with a maximum 18 points. It was clear at that stage that this would be a tight tournament as close behind were Martin Foxhall and Steve Haslam with 15 points and most people’s favourites, the Steffen brothers  Rob and David of Oshawa also with 15

Bunner and Mackenzie put the pressure on with another win and another maximum 18 points in the second round. Martin and Steve and the Steffen brothers both won with 15 points. In the final round the Foxhall and Bunner teams went head to head whilst the Steffen brothers played another Oshawa team skipped by Suzie Palmer. The Steffens won their game to finish with 3 wins and 43 points.

In the last game on the greens Foxhall and Bunner were tied after 12 ends and an extra end was played to break the tie. Martin and Steve won the extra end and incredibly finished with the same record as the Steffen brothers – each had 3 wins and 43 points. In those circumstances the tie decider is points against. Martin and Steve had 23 points against compared with the Steffen brothers 25. A great finish and some great bowling. Pictured are the sponsor Scott MacCoubrey, Steve Haslam and Martin Foxhall.

The full results are on the results page and we should also congratulate Geoff Montgomery and Heckie Langford who were in the prize money in fifth place with 2 wins and 41 points.

Other Cobourg teams with 2 wins  were:

Louisa and me  (7th) 2 wins and 35 points
Dianne Lauder and Marilyn McMillan (9th)
- 2 wins and 30 points (26 against)
Eve Gorringe and Roy Thorneycroft (10th) - 2 wins and 30 points (32 against)

One of the encouraging aspects of the last few opens has been the number of home club entries .Lets try and keep this up next season. Entering these tournaments can be a bit daunting  if it is your first time but in the long term it improves you as a bowler.

And finally I have to tell you that Steve Haslam should not have been playing today. At 6.00 pm on Wednesday night I was told that a player was double booked so some swift re-arranging of teams was required and I recruited Steve to play with Martin. I think he's glad he said "Yes"
