We-Fix-U open Mixed Pairs
It is always good to have strong performances from club teams in open tournaments – even better if they can lift the trophy. Saturday’s mixed pairs tournament, sponsored by We-Fix-U physiotherapy and foot care, held the promise of a Cobourg winner with three home teams winning their first two games. However, it turned out to be a story of near misses.
Dave Shirley and Nan Hendren; Bob and Ann Tough; and Ralph and Norma Stoffers were all undefeated and lying in second, third and fifth places respectively after two games. However none of them were able to get the third win necessary to win the title although two of the teams came very close. Dave and Nan lost by only two points to the eventual winners from Oshawa, John MacKenzie and Sheila Rideout. Bob and Ann also had a close final game and lost by only one point to David Saliba and Cara Booth from Pickering. Ralph and Norma had a disappointing final game against another Cobourg team, Geoff Montgomery and Heckie Langford. Those results dropped Bob and Ann and Ralph and Norma out of the prize money but promoted Geoff and Heckie to fourth place. Dave and Nan’s loss dropped them to third place. So near misses but good to have two Cobourg teams in the top four. The full result is on the results page and there are photos on the photos page.
There were 20 entries for this tournament and the number of entries for Opens are running ahead of the numbers last year which is very good. The next open tournament is a mens pairs on June 20th and we have a full draw of 24 teams for that.
Ontario Fours Championships
The near miss theme continued in the Ontario Fours Championships held in Windsor last weekend. Cobourg members Pauline Hill, Pat Gemmell, Kathleen Shirley and Oshawa’s Niki Chamois were representing District 14 in the Championships. In a double knockout format they won their first two games and then lost their third game to the eventual gold medal winners from District 13. That result dropped them to the ‘B’ Group to contest the remaining medal places. They won their first game in that group but then lost out to the silver medal winners and finished just outside the medal places. To finish on a positive note we did have one winner at the weekend. As well as being a Cobourg member Martin Foxhall is also a member at Stouffville and Martin was playing in the District 11 team which won gold at the Ontario Mens Fours. They will now play in the Canadian Championships later this summer.
